Again a work book for the writer aiming for TV (not for anyone unaccustomed to writing) which differs from The TV Writer's Guide by Margaret R. Weiss (Pellegrini & Cudahy for 9/18, page 436) in broader and deeper discussions of the principles and techniques which are analyzed. From a general survey of TV programs and the audiences, the touchstone of the audience and its interest is emphasized and the sections that follow cover specific areas. Dramatic writing and types of drama, non-dramatic shows-comedy, fact and semi-spontaneous, -- professional problems are given full attention, with details of craftsmanship interpolated within the fields reviewed and with the special conditions of each related to the fundamental and basic elements of all. A book for all aspirants to read through and dig in, for its philosophic interpretations as well as its mechanical know-how. There is a complete glossary of technical terms. The author's position as head of CBS-TV makes this authoritative.
