A ramble through the woods leads to the discovery of a mother’s dearest treasure in this sweetly simple tale. During their daily jaunt, Little Bear and her mother uncover the secret bounty hidden among the shadows of the forest. However, twinkling blue stones, luscious berries and even impromptu dances with butterflies fail to measure up to Mommy Bear’s mysterious heart’s desire. Thus begins Little Bear’s exuberant quest to reveal the truth. Lewis’s tale meanders along at a comforting pace, with the gentle exchanges between mother and cub revealing their deeply held affection. While the revelation of Mommy Bear’s most precious thing may come as no surprise to adult readers, it is a loving affirmation for youngsters. Ho’s full-bleed illustrations rely upon soft verdant hues to capture the beauty of an autumnal forest. Her light-filled images artfully communicate Little Bear’s sense of wonder and neatly complement the innocent sincerity of the tale. A loving tale straight from a mother’s heart. (Picture book. 4-7)
