Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini spoke and wrote often on the issues which confronted Christianity in the years just before his elevation to the throne of Peter as Pope Paul VI. The English-speaking world is offered here ten of these theological essays on the Church which Paul VI now leads. Well translated, actually this collection of pastorals and discourses -- while indicative of the reigning Pontiff's views of the great institution he guides -- appear repetitious and disconnected. No updating apparently was attempted. Even so, what is said here will be read closely and studied by all Christians concerned about the direction in which the Church is moving, particularly as preparation for the ""last"" session of Vatican II which is to convene in September.
