DUNNYBROOK by Gladys Hasty Carroll

DUNNYBROOK

By

Pub Date: Oct. 26th, 1943

One wonders at Macmillan publishing this as Fiction -- for it is a fascinating cross section of American life, through the annals of Dunnybrook -- a community in Maine, where almost everyone is related to everyone else, and Gladys Hasty Carroll tape family records for her story. The opening chapters introduce so many characters -- and apparently at such loose ends -- that it seems confusing, but as one reads, the bits fall into place, and one follows the Hastys and the Warrens and the Marrs and the Wilders and the Jewetts and the Browns from the American Revolution to World War II. One feels a part of Dunnybrook, where ""nobody dies"" -- because ""unto the third and fourth generation"" characteristics appear and reappear. It is story -- and more story -- it is America -- it is personalities and humor and pathos. Unique and unpredictable.
