SUNDAY FOR SONA

Though her Nana doesn't consider sailing an appropriate activity for ladies (""Do you think we found you on the street, to take such a chance with you?""), Sona scrapes and stains her hands helping Mr. O'Brien and Tommy get their boat shipshape and runs away in defiance when she's forbidden to crew for the North Star's first sail on San Francisco bay. The minor rebellion ends ingloriously, with Sona getting seasick her first time out, and Nana, who comes along to chaperone, having the time of her life. Strangely, the flavor of Armenian-American family life is better projected by Flynn's views of overstuffed interiors and Sona in bobbed hair and middy blouse than by Nana's heavy accent. Inconsequential, but buoyed up by a certain nostalgic verity.
