Glenn Balch's Indian and horse stories are sure fire, and Squaw and Midnight Colt prepare his readers for the new one,- a convincing account of the Comanches and how they acquired their first horses in 1715. The hero of the tale is Twisted Foot, whose name indicates why he could not qualify as a warrior. Old Man Crazy, a derelict attached to the tribe, had brought from the West strange tales of white-skinned men and their great animals. Then he and Twisted Foot are captured in a Ute raid and moved westward. There they again encounter the white explorers and the mysterious creatures- horses to us. The Utes are terrorized -- but Old Man Crazy had overcome his fear, and escapes with Twisted Foot and some stray horses, back to the tribe. Overlong- but rewarding.
