The title The Maryknell Fathers would suggest that Glenn D. Kittler's book was going to be another ponderous history of a religious society. Nothing could be more misleading. Mr. Kittler's story of the founding of Maryknoll, a unique Society dedicated to bringing Catholicism to people in foreign lands who have never heard of it, is as fast-paced and absorbing as a novel. The book marks the golden anniversary of the start of the Society by two young priests, Father Thomas Price and Father James Anthony Walsh, who overcame almost impossible difficulties to obtain ecclesiastical approbation from Pope Plus X to train American priests to be missionaries. They selected a site near Ossining, New York, as their headquarters and subsequent seminary, and from there in 1918 the first hand of Maryknoll priests left for China to work in the mission field. Since then priests from Maryknoll have labored in the Orient, South America, Mexico and Africa, enduring privations, tortures, imprisonment and martyrdom in an effort to bring the Faith to all men. Heroism and history blend here for readers to whom this combination appeals.
