The hand that rocked the cradle should be teaching the very young child to read by the time he is two. Certainly, as in all cyclical changes, we are back to Montessori and again ahead as currently we are jettisoning the prohibition of twenty years ago--""not before second grade."" Mr. Doman is a member of a neurological team which has done research-and-practice work at the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, at first working primarily with brain-injured children (previously diagnosed as deficient or psychotic). Before very long they found that brain-injured children learned very quickly and they also discovered ""what was wrong with well children."" They were wasting the crucial 1-5 years, the desire and the ability to learn everything as quickly as possible. It not only can be done, but it is being done, and Mr. Doman concludes with showing how in a basic demonstration of the techniques, along with a bibliography of 40 beginner books. He also has supportive evidence in other areas.
