Return with Basichis to those days of yesteryear when a young Jewish deserter from the Union Army, Shelby Lopez, can meet up with a strange wandering Indian named Thunderbird Hawkins and the two can form some weird sort of dynamic duo west of the Pecos. Sounds like fun. It isn't. Basichis rides off confusingly, wearyingly, in all directions; he wants to tell stories, spin yarns, go mystical, be madcap all at once. Scenes of Shelby's life, his ancestors and adventures, twirl into Thunderbird's past: coincidental meetings and shootouts and fleecings, all told dizzily without scene-breaks. Someone (don't ask us who) goes around looking for the ""Great Necklace"" and the ""Great Book"" (Clue Number One: this isn't it). Says Thunderbird: ""We're lost where we stand. We must travel, must find new planes, new voices of the spirit. No discoveries are made by standing in emptiness."" In other words--look on, constant travellers, look on.
