I KNEW DIETRICH BONHOEFFER

This volume offers reminiscences and personal impressions from a wide variety of friends, former students, relatives, and theological colleagues, of the German martyr whose legend seems near to overtaking his theological contributions to contemporary theological thought. The editors speak of this collection as not a biography, but raw material for a biography. The material is arranged in a general chronology, beginning with recollections of Bonhoeffer as a boy and continuing to his execution on the gallows. The accounts range from personal, intimate narratives and testimonies to assessments of his theological and political positions; and, as might be expected, vary greatly in length. The impression the reader may get of the man is that of an acute theologian, and courageous political plotter, and a person of profound, simple piety. This will be a much sought addition to the libraries of those who have been close and continuing readers of Bonhoeffer's writings.
