eeper and tougher than any of the experienced author's previous works, his story of the Otter, a small craft which carried freight, did salvage work, and cted as ferry boat six months after Pearl Harbor, is moving and starkly realistic. rundown of the crew, known as Dunbar's Irregulars, is indicative of the unusual events which occur: there were two seventeen-year-olds; two semi-outcast Navy men; Most soul from the army; a casual; an aging engineer; a maimed neurotic of Pearl arbor; and two Alaskan Scouts-- under the command of thick-skinned Mack Dunbar, a W I petty officer. Tense relationships and conflicts within their isolated community are probed with far-reaching insight by the author as he describes in reortorial detail the dangerous missions and exploits in which the men are engaged. Excellent reading for boys-- a book in which the brutality and immediacy of the situations are evident.
