THE OLD MAN'S COMING

I liked it, immensely. Our Scandinavian neighbors are doing interesting work, and this ranks high among the translations (a first rate job, there) recently made available to English speaking public. It is a novel of atmosphere, a skilful build-up through the gradual unfolding of the stories -- closely knit -- of a family dreading the return of the long-absent landlord. The reason for the fears gradually comes to light. When the culmination of the fears proves them to have been largely groundless, the poison still remains, the harm has gone too deep. It is a strong psychological novel, fascinating in the method of telling, and a revealing picture of the opposing forces of society today in Sweden. An important book, which you can count on for a good press and strong backing. Not for ulta-conservatives.
