KIRKUS REVIEW

The Island Boy, Aulo, achieves stature in chief Kuokoa's tribe in Ancient Hawaii with rituals celebrating approaching manhood. Aulo navigates in his first canoe and pursues a tuna to offer to the gods. But just as Aulo's weapon penetrates the tuna's flesh, a killer shark with a scarred gill, snatches the votive offering. After Kuokoa and his men defeat a besieging renegade chief and his warriors, Aulo meets the shark again to rescue Olu, the chantmaker who befriended the boy earlier.
