Many of the universal dilemmas of adolescence are recognizable in the story of seventeen-year-old Jenny MacArthur, and the problems her friendship with an American Exchange student, Ben, brought to the London apartment where her family lived. Jenny was sure she loved Ben and because of her romance insisted that her parents allow her to apply for a scholarship to Vassar. Jenny's mother worked and at first her parents refused. Then when they reassessed the situation her father became more assertive and found more lucrative employment to make it possible. But, like many mercurial teenagers, Jenny changed her mind and realized that Ben's attentions would not be restricted to her alone when he returned to his homeland, America.
