CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN PAINTING

By

Publisher: Duell, Sloan & Pearce

The Encyclopaedia Britannica sent out a questionnaire to 50 authorities on art, in the United States, -- artists, directors of museums, dealers, in order to ascertain what informed opinion considered the artists who were doing most to ""sell"" American art to Americans. 116 paintings were chosen; the collection is to be displayed in Chicago first, then go on a nation-wide tour. This book -- with stimulating and provocative introductory notes by various authorities; with biographical notes on the artists whose work is reproduced and a statement from the artist as to the specific work; with excellent reproductions, 42 in color, -- this book should be a ""natural"" for that fast growing market interested in owning art books. Representative of trends, times, personalities (chiefly of living artists); interpretation; infusion of abstract with new, wayward, intensely personal, and documentary paintings -- a revealing collection.
