TALES OF THE CHEYENNES

These tribal legends have been sensitively retold by an author who grew up knowing Indians and is now Director of Public Information at the University of Oklahoma. An introduction on the occasions and ceremonies for telling precedes a group of seven important legends- the Earth's creation, the coming of the buffalo and so forth. In the second section are seven humorous tales, mostly of the dwarf Wipio- how he dupes and is duped by other spirits and other Cheyennes. Artistic design in the drawings by Walter Richard West add to tribal flavor of a book with definite anthropological value.
