A child plays with her duck bestie.

Mavis, a red-headed, pale-skinned, freckled youngster, waves to readers from atop a rock. She introduces herself and Duck, claiming that the two are best friends. Duck doesn’t respond; instead, he stares straight ahead. Mavis claims that, while others think Duck is imaginary, he’s just shy. This may be true, as Duck later leaves just before brown-skinned Daniel approaches to invite Mavis to play soccer. Mavis declines, saying Duck will “be back any minute.” Lo and behold, Duck returns as soon as Daniel leaves. Duck and Mavis are “Two peas in a pod,” says Mavis. They adore rain, jam sandwiches, and two-player board games. Duck even sleeps in Mavis’ bed. The next day at the park, however, Duck doesn’t seem to be interested in anything Mavis is doing. The mood shifts when Duck spots Daniel playing soccer with an imaginary goose (though Mavis can also see the bird). They join in the fun. Turns out Mavis isn’t the only one with a “bird buddy!” Annable’s latest graphic novel turns imaginary friendship into a relatable experience. With at most six panels per double-page spread, the layout supports emerging readers new to the comics medium. Neither “bird buddy” speaks aside from sounds, letting Annable’s humorous character design and playful art shine.

As silly as a goose—and sweet too.
