The reminiscences of life in a Mexican mining community from the trip there in 1880, with all its discomforts, to the period of Pancho Villa. From Washington, D. C., to Batopilas, Chihuahua, Alexander Shepherd took his wife and seven children, employees, servants pets and baggage and set out for mines that had been discovered in 1632, and once there, found a quite different kind of life, which the boys of the family thoroughly enjoyed. There is the picture of Mexico before Porfirio Diaz' reign and the contrast with his powerful rule, the exciting life the boys led, the problems of mine work, incidents among the workers and the Americans, and the changes that came about. It's colorful, vacations, work, danger --all are recalled with delight.
