CHILDBIRTH WITHOUT FEAR

A successor to Dr. Read's Natural Childbirth which restates that English obstetrician's beliefs that civilization has introduced fear, pain and tension into childbirth, and that natural labor is relatively painless. He analyses the contributory factors to pain -- fear -- ignorance; he outlines the progression of labor; he shows that anesthetics are neither necessary nor desirable in natural labor, and that they deprive the user of a great spiritual experience. He indicates his own successful analgesia, suggestion; shows how to acquire relaxation; and cites fifteen cases of his experience which were highly successful. A valid argument for certain types of labor -- but one cannot but question medical sanction on certain phases of his argument.
