KIRKUS REVIEW

Sixteen Native American legends explaining weather and other natural phenomena --e.g., earthquakes, floods, and hot springs--with related legends outlined in the introductions for the individual stories. Mayo's retellings offer scarcely more than the bare-bones renditions commonly supplied by anthropologists, but her vigorous black-and-white drawings do extend the meaning somewhat. Because of the subject matter and the wide variety of sources listed, this collection will be useful to both storytellers and school-age children studying Native Americans.
