THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Pub Date: March 24th, 1941

By unanimous choice, this book is scheduled for distribution by the Book-of-the-Month, so the March 28th date is still subject to shift. This was originally reported on page 452 -- 9/15/40. It is a story, that for all its simplicity -- or perhaps because of it? -- stays by one. It is a poignant story of an Icelandic shepherd, accustomed each year to round up lost sheep in the high mountain pastures at Ascension-tide. This year he is caught by early storms as he sets forth; then is further delayed as he gives his services to others less skilled at tracking than himself. When he finally achieves his own aim, he does it at terrific cost of hunger, cold and danger, but in the end, with the help of his namesake, the goal is achieved and the Good Shepherd has brought home the sheep which were lost. A parable, told as a folk tale of modern Iceland, and vital with the feel of the country and people.
