KIRKUS REVIEW

...is that closely guarded cesspool of Russian forced labor camps, in which the author toiled and starved from the fall of Poland in 1939 until the agreement in 1943 that permitted release of Polish troops to fight in the Middle East and Italy. Though better written than usual and spiced with considerable information about the unnatural sex life forced upon inmates, the edge of horror and shock regarding these camps has been somewhat worn off by the number of books about them already in print. The author describes the year he spent in regular prison, living and eating worse than a pig, then the three years of enforced labor in the Archangelic camp area where the starved, scurvy-rid-den prisoners of both sexes struggled an lumber jacks in the great forests.
