Grand strategy is defined as the ""connections between war and the society or civilization in which it occurs"". The authors trace the different societies now enmeshed in war; France, which achieved progress or change through revolution; England through liberal reform; Germany through Realpolitik or Imperialism; Russia through Communism or imposed planning; and Democracy. The connections between war and these types of society are never too clearly formulated. Rather does this emerge as another restatement of the different isms, with some fine theoretical sounding off. Authors have military and research point of view, respectively.
