I HATE YOU, I LOVE YOU: Views of this world, through a glass lightly

Very lightly, Actually a series of homey articles on family, food, fun and friends etc., ... his family, his favorite food and his fun and friends etc. The articles are palpably pleasant for instance: ""One thing about my wife, she does not bother me with a crisis after supper when I am trying to read the paper. She reaches me before I am half way through the front yard. I have seen robins fly at snakes the same way."" There are anecdotes about his Army life, made possible by an experiment the Army was conducting with genuine 4-Fs during World War II: ""a collection of cast-offs from draft boards around the nation, a sort of home guard sent abroad by mistake""; observations on his fair state of Virginia and some of the people passing through; Truman- ""he was--and is--an individual, dividing society in a twinkling into two classes- himself and the rest of the world""; Goldwater- when reading a set speech he managed ""all the oomph of reading off an eye chart."" Mr. Friddell is a nice, undemanding sort of fella; this is for a nice, undemanding sort of reader.
