THOSE VERNEY GIRLS

An English romance plus step-mother problem pictures the large manage, in the country near London, in all its moods and moments, abining and upsetting. The girls are Georgie, 9, Susan, 13, Elizabeth, 15, and Alison, 17. Their young father Jim is a novelist who has recently acquired both a place on the Best seller list and a new wife, Nan. Much as the girls (especially Alison who is eager to keep house) resent her, Nan is as realistic as she is pretty and settles down immediately to making a happier family. Among the benefits Nan brings are those created by her own action, such as suggesting Alison be her father's secretary, and the more coincidental ones, in the arrival of her brother, Nigel Gifford, a famous actor whose presence encourages Elizabeth's dramatic abilities as it discourages Alison's shyness. Something happening all the time here, and with local characters thrown in, much of it is amusing.
