I was fascinated by this, but wonder just how its market is to be found. What is it? A symposium of first hand material -- primary sources of a hitherto scarcely tapped and rich vein, the letters and diaries of soldiers in the ranks in each of our wars,- the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican Wars, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the first World War. I don't think the editors' summary of the basic characteristics of the American soldier as a type are necessary. Those characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, are evident in every page,- toughness, a streak of sentiment, a resentment of authority, a humorous twist even in carping, an assurance at each fellow is as good as the next one. There are letters, diaries, human documents of all types. A revealing approach to the human side of wars.
