In the long range view of historical development, the immediate limitations of this three-volume study to the years of revolution- 1917 to 1923- may not seem to restrict its value. But for today's market, the pace of history is so rapid that it seems unlikely that any but serious students of that particular phase will find the work essential reading. The first volume appeared in 1951. This -- the third and last -- treats of Soviet Russia and the World and deals with foreign relations during this period. Carr analyzes the complexities due, he feels, in part to geographical position, in part to the need to strike a balance between the promotion of world revolution and the desire to establish normal diplomatic relations. The book includes an extensive bibliography and an index of the three volumes. A scholarly work- for scholars.
