A flippant introduction to English history, and one that I feel can be passed over for American children. If any introductory history is needed, the old Charlotte Yonge one serves the purpose equally well, but the Rudyard Kipling seems a step forward, and Marshall's own Island Story is the best of them all. This modernizes and colloquializes the old legends and stories, and the basic facts are given in outline form. Nothing of the economic and social background, and no gesture towards a recognition of the modern ways of teaching history.
