12 SPANISH AMERICAN POETS

Playwright and author of The Ballad of Davy Crockett selects, translates, and interprets twelve Spanish American poets and in the representation has attempted to include all types, some purely local, some with native folklore and color, some influenced by the European, the French symbolists, particularly. The poems, selected to show the development of the poet, are given both in the original and in translation. There is the softness, the musically, occasionally the obliqueness associated with the Romane languages. They reach, in the main, a high literary standard, and Hays would seem (without consulting the originals) to have done a fine and flexible piece of translation.
