KIRKUS REVIEW

Hi"" Phillips has created a delightful character, Private Purkey, who has been writing home daily to ""Dear Ma"" in Streeter fashion in the columns of the New York Sun. Private Purkey doesn't hesitate to say just what's wrong with this man's army, the generals, the administration, and especially his tough sergeant. But in spite of that you get an idea that it's not such a bad place -- and there's fun to be had for Private Purkey, millions like him, and the reader. Masculine humor.
