THE ONLY HORSE FOR JAN

The author-illustrator team who brought forth Jan and the Wild Horse collaborate again within the same sort of fictional framework. There is Natz, the wise hired farmhand, Knipperdolling, a very special friend, and Balthasar the pony. Balthasar has adjusted to farm life quite well; he performs his duties alongside old Rosa and permits Jan to ride him occasionally. But on the way home from a visit to Knipperdolling, the horse goes quite lame. How Jan and Natz cope with this new problem and reach a satisfactory solution comprises the essential plot which is set against the customs and folkways and unique countryside of Westphalia. Again, the subtle comedy is given more visual expression through Horst Lemke's humorous illustrations. Youngsters who have formed a deep attachment to one animal will understand why Balthasar is ""the only horse for Jan"".
