The second book (Robert Carse' The Unconquered, page 164, April 1st bulletin, a semi-fictional story of resistance in the occupied countries, was the first) about Europe's underground, this time presented through personal accounts of some leading exiles who include Jan Masaryk, Antonia Paderewski, Genevieve Tobouis, as each writes of his or her country. It's equally good reading as Curt Riess' Underground Europe, reviewed on the next page. It can be differentiated in that it is a more general, a better picture of the country overground as well as underground, tenor, morale, standard of living. It is not as dramatic perhaps -- there is less incident per incident reporting. Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Yugoslavia, Greece -- from the guerilla mountain Chetniks of the Balkans to the practical-joking children of the Netherlands. A high level of reporting, of writing, is maintained.
