A sort of ""shape of things to come"" were England to capitulate to Nazi Germany. And a black and fearful picture he paints. This purports to be the diary of an elderly Englishman, living in a Surrey village, and recording the indignities, the brutalities, the barbarianisms of five months occupation in 1944. The policing is so stringent that guerilla activities are impossible; the men are in concentration camps, the women held apart, there is no private life. As the story ends, he knows that information against him is being lodged by an English Nazi. Propaganda -- plus.
