HIS OWN PLACE

Author of Joseph and His Brethren with another novel of English farm folk in Suffolk, from 1884 almost to the present. Story of a lad who goes as apprentice to the Clary family, land owners, and encounters the antagonism of Edgar, his inferior in everything but position. Finally, he runs away to London, works in a pub, and returns to buy a small, difficult farm which makes him his own master. He marries, makes a success of his small venture, refuses larger opportunities -- and then is a victim of the post-war years and the death of the small farm. Finally, he is forced to capitulate and sell out to Edgar, and once again to endure his contemptuous attitude, but at the close a way opens for a new, small start. A book limited in its potentialities by the limited interest in the English country scene, but with a nice quality. The beat thing he has done since Joseph and His Brethren.
