A TREASURY OF GREAT REPORTING

Pub Date: Oct. 28th, 1949
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

The expected S & S colossus, which runs to over a thousand pages and represents many countries, many centuries. One questions however, whether this will have quite as definite a destination as some of these anthologies have had- and from the point of view of straight readability, Ward Greene's Star Reporters (Random House -1948) was more concentrated more manageable. Opening here with the confession of the witch Walpurga in the 16th century, this goes on to many famous issues and incidents; the storming of the Bastille; the Boston Tea Party; the Hamilton -- Burr duel; Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo; the charge of the Light Brigade; Abe Lincoln's farewell in Illinois; the Dreyfus affair; the murder trial of Harry Thaw; World War I; the KKK; the Moscow trials; the Lindbergh flight; the Sacco & Vanzetti case; and World War II from the Reichstag fire to Spain to Pearl Harbor and on through many high points of battle action. And you will meet all kinds of people- Karl Marx, Mark Twain, Garibaldi, Jack the Ripper, Carrie Nation, Jack London, H.G. Wells, Kipling, Mata Hari, etc. etc. In any case, this is the most for your money- and these treasuries have a commercial value.
