KIRKUS REVIEW

This handsome book offers readers the opportunity to compare and contrast the cultures and principal sights of Hong Kong, Thailand, Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore and Malaya, Burma, Indonesia and the Philippines. At one time too strange and far off to demand attention by the general reading audience, these countries today are front page news. The conflict between traditional and modern cultures, the struggle to emerge as productive nations and the vast differences among the people of Southeast Asia are easily seen in these perceptive black and white photographs taken by the author, and a brief but informative text. Similar in many respects to a guidebook, this will serve as a fine and palatable introduction to further study of an intriguing part of the world.
