Indeed, there will be those to feel that this novel is more of an indignity than anything which takes place in it. James Arthur, a tradesman's son from England, comes to the Jamaica (of ? years ago) as a bookkeeper at Rose Hall, a sugar plantation in the hands of Annie Palmer who lashes the black backs of black bucks during the daytime while buckling under them in her bed at night. Arthur's in a very willing learning situation--from Mary Lou, ""a hot, urgent animal,"" to Annie herself who's no slouch and who comes to the end she so well deserves in a native uprising. Under the bougainvillea, more than one bugaboo and it all seethes with sex....Yassuh Yerbyites.
