Simply written survey of medicine then and now, which summarizes the contributions and development of the medical sciences. Outlining the knowns and largely unknowns, up to the 19th century, the first milestone was achieved with the germ theory which introduced the identification of almost all bacterial killers. Preventatives, anti-toxins and serums, chemotherapy from Ehrlich's 606 to the sulfas, Trudeau T.H., antisapsin and anesthesia, on to the growing knowledge of vitamins, and the specialties, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynecology, heart, kidneys, etc., surgery and its branches. Dilemmas for today -- specialization and socialization. A reasonably inclusive place of work, though there are some strange omissions, such as endocrinology.
