KIRKUS REVIEW

A colorful look at animals' outsides: skin, hair, feathers, scales, spines. Following the ``guess-and-learn'' format she used in Breathtaking Noses, etc., Machotka presents a close-up photo detail (e.g., of a snake's scales) and a teaser of text (``Hard, overlapping scales belong to a...''), then a page-turn to a photo of the whole animal and two or three surprisingly detailed and informative paragraphs about the special features of its covering. Hedgehog, tarantula, shark, frog, snake, turtle, swan, and polar bear are included for a good selection of phyla. In some cases, additional photos would have been useful: e.g., the snake's belly scales (which help it move) are very different from the back scales that are shown, while the downy swan feather differs from the contour feathers that help the bird fly and swim. Still, an appealing introduction. (Nonfiction. 5-8)
