LONDON FRONT

A volume that has somewhat the appeal of War Letters from England (see page 25) but that has less vitality, less of the feeling of intimate sharing of what goes on, of how London is living and feeling. These letters were written from August 1939 to August 1940, so miss the intensest battle on the London front, and are instead an almost daily round robin to the Harwoods' closest friends in America (Sam Behrman and Alexander Woollcott, chiefly). They are opinion and comment more than observation, and consequently have a dated feel today. They are stimulating at times, but too often they suffer in comparison with such things as Rebecca West's articles on the London front (in the New Yorker).
