KIRKUS REVIEW

Givon and Uttal's first book is an attempt to help children cope with the emotional aftershocks of an earthquake, without adding to their fears. Readers experience an earthquake through the eyes of a young boy, whose thoughts and feelings are conveyed in a somewhat clumsy rhyming verse. Givon's message is one of optimism, keeping the disaster in perspective. When the family surveys the damage, including broken flower pots, the father says, ``Not important''--because no one in the family was hurt. The text provides departure points for explaining what causes earthquakes and how to prepare for the next one (safety tips and a checklist are included). The playful illustrations help create a tone that is ultimately reassuring--an approach that will be appreciated by shaky parents and kids alike. (glossary) (Picture book. 4-8)
