THE LAST CHIEF, ALASKAN TRAPPER

This is more about Little Fox, Alaskan Trapper (1963, p. 663, J-225). Little Fox is now fully grown, and ready to take over all the responsibility of the cabin when his partner, Trapper Fred, decides to leave. The description of his life trapping, fishing, and traveling by dog team out in the Alaskan tundra is tough, sturdy, unadorned, and perfectly convincing. His adventures--trapping a fine fox, bringing aid to a sick man alone in the wilderness, attacked and robbed while on one of his trips, snaring a murderer--are always exciting and seem perfectly natural. They are random, however, and this book lacks the continuity of the strongly developed relationship between Trapper Fred and Little Fox. It is nevertheless good, virile reading for boys, who will be happy to follow up on these characters.
