KIRKUS REVIEW

This short tale about a third son who goes off in his clever brothers' wake to compete for the princess' hand is one of the lighter and trimmer of Andersen's stories, and Shtainmets brings out the fun in it with his rapid, unpretentious line and watercolor pictures. Hans, dressed as a jester, fides along on his goat, throws mud at the Councilman and woos the princess in clear, uncluttered scenes whose natural directness complements the artless appeal of his character.
