THE RUTGERS GUIDE TO LOWERING YOUR CHOLESTEROL: A Common-Sense Approach

A complete look at the modern villain of medicine, cholesterol, which so insidiously threatens our health. The problem is obvious: 500,000 Americans die annually and another 680,000 are hospitalized from heart attacks. The authors insist that much of this human pain is avoidable by sensible attention to cholesterol's dangers. The facts they muster seem conclusive. All countries in which beef is widely consumed experience high heart-disease incidence, while heart disease is almost nonexistent in societies where beef is avoided. Dr. Richard Kunin in Mega-Nutrition has pointed out that low-fat diets are not sufficient to prevent atherosclerosis. The authors proceed from this point, offering a plethora of common-sense advice ranging from intelligent exercise to learning the components of food. They suggest a diet rich in such foods as oatmeal, beans, garlic, onions, alfalfa sprouts, and avocados, supplemented by fish-oil capsules. The authors insist that you can still have fun with food and sing the praises of Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and even some Mexican cuisine in this regard. The work closes with a 35-page section of low-cholesterol recipes and dinner plans. A useful work in all.
