Frankly, I'd go slow on this, if I were a bookseller. It is pretty definitely ""second string Fallada"" -- and you'll be better prepared for his next, which we bear is going to be a ten strike, if you've not oversold -- and disappointed -- customers with this. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I acknowledge to having found it obscure, confused and difficult reading, and -- in the last analysis, not worth the effort. The story of a strange human being, passionate, uncontrolled, sadistic -- a man of a North Sea island farm, who lived a sort of Taming the Shrew life with first one woman, then another -- Count on some sale on Fallada's name.
