OUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH GERMANY

An analysis and diagnois which parallels The Return of Germany (Regnery- P.30) in its coverage and draws a few points of concurrence but one main contradiction. For while Muhlen describes a Germany which is chiefly apathetic and negativistic, Habe's Germany is well on the way to re-nazification (a fact supported by the recent Roper survey). Habe's criticism of our overall policy begins with our declaration of the country's collective guilt after the war- while only a few were singled out for trial; with our non-fraternization policy which had a tangible result of 94,000 illegitimate children; with the failure of re-education; with the naivete and formlessness of our attitudes as against Russia's one-way drive. The political parties and the new leaders; the press and our abandonment of the government News Zextung (Habe was its editor); anti-semitism which continues in a country without Jews; German youth- as a democratic hope- diminishing; remilitarization ""the fatal error"" since Germany cannot be defended- or counted on; the cultural leg; the standard of living- all this supports the dismal conclusions -- and the sorry fact that in our attempt to prevent World War III, we have lost World War II.... Some of this is controversial, particularly in Habe's failure to recognize that our changing policy in Germany has been motivated by our changing attitude toward Russia- from ally to potential enemy. But most of it is disheartening and alarming.
