TINTORETTO: The Paintings and Drawings

This famous 16th century artist of the counter reformation is here presented in exhaustive treatment, with some 300 reproductions of his works, in a beautiful book a companion volume to the Titian. Though the publication of the book was to have been linked with the Tintoretto exhibition in Venice, the postponement, due to the war, does not materially affect the permanent value of the book as record. The text discusses his life and times, the stylistic features of his work, detailed comparison of his draughtsmanship with that of Michelangelo, his colour with his master, Titian. There is unusually careful linking of text with cross reference to the plates. Tintoretto is portrayed as a Baroque artist, the dominant figure in the transition from the High Renaissance, as a ""modern artist, clothed in the grab of the Classic Art"".
