LITTLE TOOT ON THE THAMES

Little Toot, the friendly little tug with the cheerful whistle, turned cosmopolitan when he tried to bring in a tramp steamer and instead got towed to London. From the confused harbor, he went for a leisurely float up the Thames, taking in the important sights. He was sent home in disgrace after he blocked the way in a boat race, but demonstrated his heroism by staying up all night protecting ships from a sunken barge. His warning saved a ceremonial flotilla, and as a reward Little Toot was led home in style by the Queen Elizabeth. Young children can easily identify with the salty tug and his combined qualities of mischief and responsibility. They will be delighted with the repetition of their friend's heroism, and the adults who read this one aloud may be pleased to have a variant.
