KIRKUS REVIEW

Vicki has much the same attitude as Stacy (see Shelter From the Wind, above) but expresses it in a more hard-assed, contemporary style. ""I'm writing this for me, not for you,"" she tells us. . . and finally, ""Just keep your opinion to yourself around me, or you'll get whatever I have in my hand right in your face."" We'll take that risk to say that the tough talk becomes strident and gimmicky, especially since Vicki's hoody friends are mere cartoons and her sudden passion for all this ecology ""jive"" like studying pocket gophers and growing strawberries just doesn't figure. Vicki is trying hard to attract reluctant readers by proving she's one of the crowd, but they'll be the first to tell her what she can do with her act.
