It's payback time for soldier-of-fortune Rainbow Porter when April Bow, unofficially adopted daughter of his Vietnam buddy Toker Bow, turns up at his aerie outside Albuquerque with the news that Toker's been killed by a bomb and his house ransacked. Packing light, and taking only a few sets of false identities, Rainbow and April crisscross the globe (L.A., Mexico, the Philippines, D.C., El Paso) hunting down the self-protective survivors of a tiny covert unit deflected (by the CIA, natch) from a lucrative currency-exchange scam to running guns to Communist insurgents in the Philippines. In between long white nights between the sheets, they end up finding everybody, but it's not much of a reunion, even warmed by April's tender refrain (``Are you my father?''); without exception they're welcomed with open armaments, and a final cataclysmic shootout is inevitable. A first novel (a sequel is in the works) for the tough-minded fans of Rick Boyer's Doc Adams yarns.
